Title
Paul Phillips - If You Knew Susie (clip)
Subject
Northern / Singing; Transitional/Western 1940s
Description
Paul Phillips was a popular Oklahoma square dance caller. This clip presents the introduction and the first time through the figure. Phillips calls the figure twice for head gents, twice for side gents, and then finishes with a break that is a variation of the opener. There are at least half a dozen square dance recordings of this tune with different figures.
This track was recorded with the Oklahoma Rand Hands (uncredited musicians) and Ernie Felice on accordion. Four tracks were recorded in Los Angeles and released by Capital Records, each with an instrumental only track on the flip side: ("Charlie My Boy" album DAS-4021, "If You've Got The Money, I've Got The Time" album DAS-4022, "If You Knew Susie [Like I Know Susie]" album DAS-4023, and "There'll Be Some Changes Made" album DAS-4024).
Several videotaped versions of the dance are available on this website, here and here, both called by Ralph Sweet.
