Gib Gilbert - Colorado caller
Creator: Gib GIlbert (January 8, 1979)
We're fortunate to have these live recordings from a 1979 dance called by Gib Gilbert with Yankee Ingenuity. In his introduction to the Boston area crowd, Tony Parkes comments, "All I'm going to say about him is he's one of the finest callers it's been my pleasure to hear. From Aurora, Colorado, please welcome Gib Gilbert."
The teaching portion of the squares included here have been lightly edited to eliminate extraneous comments, band chatter, and additional walkthroughs. The dances are:
- Lady Round Two, Gent Cut Through
- Forward 6, Fall Back 8
- Just Because
- Western Docey-do
- Allemande Thar
- Alabama Jubilee
- Hoedown
In a loving tribute upon Gib GIlbert's death, Enid Cocke wrote: "The great constant in Gib's life was square dance calling, which he began at the age of nine under the instruction of his father, an Arky-style caller and fiddler from Hope, Arkansas. in high school Gib founded an exhibition team and traveled a five-state area to perform. While a student at the University of Colorado, he called for the Calico and Boots Exhibition Dance Team and served as president of the group. He led the exhibition team to 30 cities and five national conventions." (Note: those comments can be read in full by clicking on the Additional Fileslink.)
Bill Litchman, himself an accomplished caller of traditional western squares, comments: "I'm glad you've got recordings of Gib's calling. He took his calling style directly from his father and Marvin Shilling. Listening to Marvin, I can hear Gib easily. Gib taught me."
The audiotape of the evening was made by Tony Parkes and is among the Tony Parkes collection at the New Hampshire Library of Traditional Music and Dance, University of New Hampshire. Dimond Library, Special Collections, Durham, NH.
